One word, five clues

Five carefully chosen clues. One everyday word. Take it one clue at a time.

The challenge

Choose one word from this set: planet, pencil, kettle, garden. It must satisfy every clue: it has six letters; it begins with P; its second letter is E; it names something you can hold; and it is used to make marks on paper.

You can solve this on paper. Cross out a word only when you can name a clue it fails. There is no need to use every clue in order.

Check each candidate

Planet begins with P and has six letters, but its second letter is L. Kettle starts with K. Garden starts with G. Pencil is the only candidate with P followed by E.

Pencil also has six letters, fits in a hand, and can make marks on paper. Within the supplied candidate set it is the unique solution. The set matters: we are not claiming to have checked every word in the English language.

Swap roles

Write down four new candidate words and choose a target. Build clues that eliminate the other three, checking each one before you share the puzzle.

Invite your partner to explain which clue did the most work. Sometimes one precise clue can be more helpful than a long list of vague ones.
